ADDICTION IS A BRAIN DISEASE

The most important scientists in the field of addiction all believe addiction, whether the result of genetics or environmental factors, is a brain disease.  Expediting brain repair, and giving our clients tools for long term sobriety, is what the Malibu Beach Recovery System is all about.

Every day we are asked tough, probing questions about addiction by parents/spouses/families/friends.  Some of the best answers can be found in an interview (http://www.hbo.com/addiction/thefilm/supplemental/624_nora_volkow.html)
Dr. Nora Volkow, MD gave several years ago to HBO for its special called “Addiction.”

Dr. Volkow is Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institute of Health.  An internationally recognized research scientist, she was an early proponent of the Reward Deficiency Syndrome theory originated by Dr. Kenneth Blum, and has documented changes in the dopamine system affecting the actions of frontal brain regions.
Here are some of the many questions answered in her interview:

  1.  How do we know addiction is a brain disease?
  2. How do drugs modify the brain?
  3. Are people genetically predisposed to addiction?
  4. Do environmental factors influence people to become addicts?
  5. Can the addicted brain recover?
  6. What about relapse?
  7. What steps must addicts take to recover?
  8. Why are at least 90 days of treatment the best option?
